Kuwaiti daily newspaper claims that the young girl named Rawan passed away because of internal hemorrhaging related to vaginal tearing.
However, a security official in Haradh denied the incident to happen. The official did not disclose his name because he was not authorized to speak to the press.
But two Meedi residents contacted by Reuters confirmed the incident. They claim that the said tribal chiefs tried to cover up what happened after the news broke. They also warned a local journalist not to cover the story.
This case is common to poor families in Yemen. They would let their young daughters to marry to save on the costs of bringing up a child and at the same time earn extra money from the dowry given to the girl.
UNICEF said that around 700 million women were married under the age of 18 around the world today. It increases the possibilities of leaving school and experiencing domestic violence. This unfortunate event may lead to a lifetime disadvantage and deprivation.
